It is Saturday night in ole Sydney town and I am getting my self down to the Metro for a rocking good time as for Wolfmother are in town as part of their Gypsy Caravan Tour that has them playing shows in every major city alongside regional ones.

For tonight’s show at the Metro and the previous nights at Waves down in the Gong, Wolfmother have hand picked classic 90’s stoner rock outfit Tumbleweed to warm us up and the turnout for these guys was sensational. With the sudden loss of founding member Jay Curley in 2014 no one really knew if we would ever hear these guys live again, but with a new bassist in long time friend Jamie Cleaves, Tumbleweed put on a show that their long time fans and new ones really enjoyed.

Tumbleweed, alongside their fans, proved you are never to old to rock as they churned through a set list which played out like a best of. Tracks like Daddy Long Legs took me back, along with Armchair Ride and Sundial. But I say it was Gyroscope that was met with the biggest applause and got going a somewhat tiny mosh pit proving old rockers never die.

Alright, out with the old guard in with the new, they sure do know how to keep us waiting as the crowd is now swelled to Metro capacity as I, in true rock fashion, knock back a few drinks to really get my Saturday night fever on.

Turns out I really didn’t need the beers as for once the stage lights dimmed and the band emerged out of the dark, the first shred of the guitar comes blaring through the speakers over the roar of the crowd. Then the lights blast back on and I, alongside everyone else inside these walls, was taken over by the music and we get rocking straight away to the title track from their latest release, Victorious.

Andrew Stockdale’s voice is unique to say the least but hearing it tonight in the Metro I really took notice of how good it is. As the drums pounded off the Metro walls and the guitar roared its noise all the way to the back, it was such wonderful sight to behold as the crowd became this sea of energy and unity just loving every minute of it. The band are really talented musicians as they jump and move about the stage and the guitarist plays keys as well, aww man it was freaking awesome!!!

When it came to the setlist, Gypsy Caravan was one of the best tracks from the new stuff. But what got us really going were the early classics like Woman and Apple Tree along with New Moon Rising and Minds Eye.. Closing out the main set was California Queen followed by Dimension.

The encore happens all rather quickly and I missed whom they had bought out on stage with them but I know from being a fan of Aus music from the 90’s that they are doing a cover of Rat Cat’s ‘Ain’t That Bad’ and whoever is up there with them is quite possibly drunker then I. Well every great rocking time must end and we all know what we want to hear before they leave us and they of course oblige us. For as soon as that unmistakeable chord progression is played the crowd lose their shit and things get way more rocking then ever before as we are told a little story about The Joker and The Thief of the night.

What an ending to what was a great show. There ain’t nobody in this place that didn’t have a real good time tonight. Ain’t no way, ain’t no how. Stockdale is a natural showman and one of the best front men in Aus rock. Now you add to this the two talented band mates he has with him who helped craft such an epic sound tonight then you take the 90’s nostalgia aspect, you have yourself not just a great rock show but a fucking great rock show. So get out there and see it NOW !!!
