Family Fold returns with a further teaser from forthcoming album Ashfield Skyline, in the form of quirky new single and video, ‘Molly Meldrum’s Eyes’.

Family Fold’s frontman and songwriter Paul Andrews wrote ‘Molly Meldrum’s Eyes’ when he was 25 and only rediscovered the song in 2016. He explains, “I was clearly pining for the old days when I was in my 20s! My old band Lazy Susan did an online release in 2016 of a couple of unreleased/demos/live albums and I rediscovered Molly Meldrum’s Eyes when I was sorting through old boxes of tapes and CDs. I thought it was too good to throw away on a demos album, so put it aside for consideration for Ashfield Skyline and it ended up making the cut.”

In the lyrics for ‘Molly Meldrum’s Eyes’, Paul namechecks two other Australian performers of the era – John Paul Young (JPY) and Cheetah – both members of the Alberts stable of artists. “I just remember seeing JPY on Countdown in his sailor’s suit or punching Molly in the nose and it was just revelatory. ‘Who is that guy with the bad perm being rude to Molly?’ Seeing Cheetah sing ‘Spend the Night’ on Countdown was a revelation of a different sort. I must have been around 10 years old when that came out and it was like, ‘Whoa…this is going to make my brain explode.”

The video for ‘Molly Meldrum’s Eyes’ is a gentle nod of tribute to the Cold Chisel film clip for ‘Cheap Wine’ and was filmed in a 1970s fibro house in western Sydney to capture the vibe of the era. The clip also features an original copy of a ‘Sale of the Century’ board game, which Paul won when competing on the show as a 16 year old!
