Sydney pop punkers Yours Truly are just about to release their new EP Afterglow. We’ve been saying it for a long time now and we will keep saying it Yours Truly are a need to know band. Their youthful energy, catchy songs, emotive lyrics, impressive live shows combined with the fact they are one of the nicest and most genuine bands we’ve ever met make them deserving of every success. With the release of the new EP, more touring and upcoming appearance at Download Festival UK the band has plenty to be excited about. We caught up Yours Truly vocalist Mikaila Delgado to learn more about the new EP.

What’s 2019 been like for you so far?

Mikaila Delgado
It’s been weird but weird in a good way, it’s been very busy. Going straight into 2019 we did Unify and then the Faim tour. Then next we are doing the Hellions tour then off to UK.

SCENEzine
Huge congrats on your new EP you must be super proud of it?

Mikaila Delgado
I am, thank you so much.

SCENEzine
I’m guessing you can’t wait for it to be finally out so everybody can hear it?

Mikaila Delgado
Yes one hundred percent. I just want it to be out. We’ve been releasing songs off it like “Circles” and then we just put out “I can’t feel”. There’s two more songs that I can’t wait for everybody to hear. It’ll be out before I know it I guess.

SCENEzine
What’s it like being a part of the Unified family?

Mikaila Delgado
It’s been amazing they are so good. We are very lucky that they have decided to take us on. We have the same ideas. I have only good things to say about them, we are really excited for the future.

SCENEzine
I get the feeling that the video for “Circles” was pretty fun to make?

Mikaila Delgado
Yeah it was all done in one day. It was fun in the way that we got to have all of our friends and family there with us. It was so hot that day I remember we filmed that video late December just after coming back from touring with Mayday Parade. We had come back from Perth and were exhausted and it was so hot but we still had fun.

SCENEzine
I love how bright the video is.

Mikaila Delgado
Yeah and it’s funny because the song is not super sunshine and rainbows. We aren’t going to pretend to be this dark band because that’s not who we are. We wanted to put our own personalities into the video. We wanted to keep the video bright and positive while trying to get our message across.

SCENEzine
You’ve just recently released the song “I can’t Feel”. It must be a pretty rad feeling to have a platform lyrically to release a song like that?

Mikaila Delgado
Yeah that songs always been really important to me. Talking about things that I’ve gone through in my life and my medical history. The amount of people going through the same things as me messaging me from all around the world thanking me for the song has made me so emotional, it’s really nice.

SCENEzine
Where did the voodoo doll in the video come from?

Mikaila Delgado
The voodoo doll represents the pain that I feel. When we spoke with the director about what we were going to do he said he could get someone to make a doll. He said send me what you are going to wear and we will make a doll. I rocked up on the day and it looked like me (laughs).

SCENEzine
So maybe we might start to see those dolls at your merch desk?

Mikaila Delgado
(laughs) I don’t know if I want people to have voodoo dolls of me.

The EP also features Melbourne’s hottest vegan Jake from the band Between You and Me. Was that as simple as just saying hey dude do you want to be on a track?

Mikaila Delgado
Yeah one hundred percent. Jake’s one of my closest friends. We had spoken about doing a song together for a while. We had this song and we all looked at each other and said lets just ask Jake. Then we asked him and he flew up to Sydney spending a whole day in the studio. He wrote his own parts, we finished the song with him. It’s not just him singing on a song he collaborated on it, helping us write it. That’s the coolest part of that song.

When you look back on the last twelve months from support slots to radio play and recognition does that year seem more surreal than any other?

Mikaila Delgado
Of course. I still can’t believe that we are getting to do the things that we do. We didn’t know when we were doing this EP that it was going to come out on a label. We didn’t expect to be this young and signed to a label. We’ve been working really hard and putting all of our energy towards Yours Truly and it’s now we are realising it’s paying off.

SCENEzine
The world surreal must be an understatement when you think about the fact you are playing Download Festival UK. Are you excited or nervous?

Mikaila Delgado
I’m excited but I’m nervous. I hate flying. I’ve gotten better but I have a fear of flying. I’m low key scared about travelling so far because we’ve never done it before. I’m excited to get over there. I don’t know who’s going to come and see us but I’m hoping whoever watches us enjoys it, that’s all I can really ask for.

SCENEzine
I’ve seen Yours Truly a few times live and at every show I feel like Teddie is the crazy one in the band. Do you have a favourite crazy Teddie live moment?

Mikaila Delgado’s
I think he gets crazier off stage (laughs). My favourite crazy Teddie live moment was once he did a shoey on stage then jumped into the audience with his guitar still on him. He was fine but I was worried he would hurt somebody with his guitar. Also not a crazy moment but I remember when Teddie got a brand new beautiful guitar, he played his first show with it and when we played our last song I saw the guitar come straight off his shoulder and onto the floor. The look on his face when he picked it up he was heartbroken. There’s photos of him dropping it and his face slowly becoming more upset.

SCENEzine
Lastly do you have a message for the Yours Truly fans who are excited for the EP?

Mikaila Delgado
I just really hope that you all enjoy it as much as we did making it. Thank you so much for having a listen and checking us out, hopefully see you at a show.
