Lately there seems to be so many amazing female fronted bands coming from Australia. Our latest discovery is the band Yours Truly. To celebrate the release of their new song “High Hopes” we caught up with vocalist Mikaila Delgado to learn more about the band and get her advice on Valentines Day.

Firstly huge congrats on your new song “High Hopes”. Can you tell us a bit about the song meaning?

Mikaila Delgado
Thank you so much! High Hopes was a song I wrote about someone who I thought had believed in me but turned out to let me down and sold out on me. In the beginning of the song I’m acknowledging the fact that things didn’t turn out the way I wanted them to, and by the end of the song I’ve realised that this is the way it is and I’m better off this way.

Was the video for ‘High Hopes” fun to make?

Mikaila Delgado
We got to do the video with our friend Harry (Kangiten Productions) and his team! We travelled down to Goulburn and Bigga to film the video and spent two days working on it and hanging out, so it was a lot of fun!

How does your lyric writing process work?

Mikaila Delgado
My lyric process usually starts with an idea of what I want to say in the song. I’ll usually write lyrics along these lines and sing them with different melodies until I find what I want the verses and choruses to sound like. I like writing my lyrics knowing what vowel I want to finish my lines with and then take the lines I’ve written and go from there!

You recently got to support We The Kings at the Metro Sydney, how was that experience for you?

Mikaila Delgado
We The Kings was an amazing experience! The Metro is the biggest venue we’ve had the pleasure to play this far! The guys in We The Kings were also really lovely, we got to talk to them and they gave us great advice!

Are any other female vocalist’s inspiring you at the moment?

Mikaila Delgado
We got to play two shows last year with Tonight Alive, and watching Jenna on stage was really inspirational to me. She’s always been someone who I’ve looked up to and having had the chance to play those shows was surreal! It’s been really inspiring to see other Aussie female fronted bands killing it like Stand Atlantic and Stateside!

SCENEzine
Do you still enjoy playing “Strangers” live getting to hear older fans sing it back?

Mikaila Delgado
Strangers would probably be my favourite song off the EP! Seeing people enjoy it as much as we did creating it and singing it back to us is out of this world!

SCENEzine
What does the band have planned for the rest of 2018?

Mikaila Delgado
We’re currently in the studio working on new music and we can’t wait to share it with everyone! Besides that, we plan on playing heaps of shows!

SCENEzine
Lastly can you give any advice to all the guys out there for Valentines Day?

Mikaila Delgado
Pretend it’s Valentines Day everyday! We need more love in this world!
