I was not to sure what to expect when i attend the Metro Theatre in Sydney on Wednesday night to see the hilarious comedic actor/singer Craig Robinson, i have seen live music before and i have seen live comedy before but never have i seen live comedy music before. Craig is best known for his work on screen in the American OfficeTV series or films like Pineapple Express and This Is The End
One of the unexpected things was having Eric Griffin from Workaholics Getting warming things up whilst the band set up. Eric was quite funny as he made fun of everything from online dating, age approbate dating and friend-zoning, he even made some local jokes about our lock laws and the price of rent in Sydney.
So if you don’t know part of Craigs show and one of the absolute highlights is his band the Nasty Delicious this seven piece ensemble complete with two saxophonist, trumpet player, funky ass bass man, insane drummer smooth guitarist, and his brother Chris Rob as the Keys man. The band would play all night with some funk filled sweet and smooth RnB vibes later a audience member would shout out play some Coltrane to which the band obliged and sounded fantastic over all they sounded very impressive and would be the foil to some of Craig’s jokes .
When the band finish doing there thing we make some noise for the man of the hour with the drums rolling and the horns sounding we get a 2001 Space Odyssey intro for the sexiest face on the planet (there words not mine) Mr Craig Robinson !!!! He starts things off with a little bit of Happy and You Know It ,but we fucked up the stomp your feet part lol.
Craig is a real master of his craft at times i am not sure if i am watching a music gig or stand up comedy as he seemingly blends the two worlds. Nothing had us laughing harder when he played i guess what one might consider his biggest musical hit with Take Them Panties he just doesn’t do what you might heard or seem before no he finds new ways to mix that shit up and let me tell you i don’t think i will ever be able to sing or hear Amazing Grace ever the same way again. He had the funniest stuff to say when he was expressing his view point on marriage and his requirements for a soul mate, even his choice for what music he would want to walk down the isle to, had me thinking dam thats a great idea. He called us bullshitters for casting out the impression that we have Kangaroos everywhere but does acknowledge we have some big ass cockroaches but hey we are NSW after all, but nothing had us all fill up with national pride more then when he did a piece on national anthems and delivered a cracking soulful rendition of our own but not past the first verse because who really ever knows what comes past that.
One highlight of the night that must be mentioned is when Craig starts to play a few bars of No Diggity by Blackstreet stops asks if any one really knows the words and invites on stage Ronnie well let me tell you Ronnie absolutely kills it up there, Craig is so impressed he keeps him on stage for more R’n’B action as they deliver the most stirring cover of Boyz 2 Men end of the road for a moment i forget where i am and think i am actually at a Boyz 2 Men gig wow and if that wasn’t impressive enough we find out Ronnie is a home town rapper with a single out it is a cover of Montell Jordans This Is How We Do It man you couldn’t have scripted this better in the middle of the song Craig puts his own spin on the break down it was all very very impressive.
If you like live music, live comedy or both your you just love Craig Robinson you need to get yourself to the rest of the shows he has got going on around the country trust me it is well worth it and something very unique you may not get to see again in your local capital city so go on get on top that shit right now and trust me by the end of the night you will wana take them panties off.
