Tom Lanyon explains: “As we we’re nearing the end of the recording process for Drag It Down On You, we came to the decision to not include lyrics with the record. There were many reasons why we felt best not to— personal reasons, safety reasons—but I guess the overriding feeling was that we didn’t want to hand these songs over to you on a platter. They mean so much to us, and we want them to mean so much to you. We felt like like giving you a ‘key’ to the record straight away, would be unfair. Seemed to me to cheapen the whole thing. You’ll mis-hear a word, but you’ll make it what you want hear. Maybe even need to hear. I love that about records. That you can make them you’re own. Your own private version that no-one else can have. Your’s and your’s alone.
But, we get it. I remember ripping away shrink-wrapped CDs and opening booklets to complete disappointment and befuddlement that I didn’t the keys straight away too. Why would they do that? Lazy? Cheap? Maybe, maybe not. I wonder whether those bands felt that same way about lyrics as I do now? So trust me, we get it. I was pissed too.
So, we are publishing lyrics.
But, we want to do it in a way that you—if you care at all; which you might not, that’s fine—kind of have to earn. We still aren’t giving them to you like you’d probably wish. You just need to be patient, is all. We want to give you the key, just bit-by-bit.
Starting tonight at 12am, anywhere you are in the world, Okay from Drag It Down On You will start streaming and accompanying it, will be handwritten lyrics by me. I have bad handwriting, so apologies in advance. Okay will be viewable for 24 hours, then will disappear at 12am the following night. You won’t be able to skip forward or back. Ephemeral. And gone for good. Replacing it will be Happy In Your Head, then Roll Ur Eyes and so on until we finish with Baby’s Breath a fortnight later.
Each song, steaming and lyrics, for 24 hours only.
Sound good? Sound bad? Sound annoying? It’s probably all three.
But it’s happening, and it’s happening here: www.dragitdownonyou.com
Want to thank Charlie Gleason (from Brightly, listen to his band) so so much for the hard work in bringing this project to life. He has done so much work for Ceres over the years, and we really can’t thank him enough. Love you Charlie.
It’s a weird thing, this band. It’s hard and fun and trying and incredible. After all this, for someone to care about what I write is an amazing thing. I don’t want to take that for granted. So here we are.
Thanks for reading this far—see you on the other side.”
