Amyl and the Sniffers share a new single ‘Hertz‘, the latest and lead cut from their forthcoming second album Comfort To Me – out this Friday, September 10. The track is partnered by an explosive new video, shot, edited and directed by PHC Films – watch below…
Frontwoman Amy Taylor explains the inspiration behind the song, “Hertz is a daydream of wanting to go to the country/bush and see landscapes other than the city, go like four-wheeling driving or getting sunburnt and having fresh air. Repulsed by confinement kind of daydream. Sometimes when we’re on tour and we drive past a field I just want to run in it. The frustration of being stuck in one place. I didn’t know who I was writing it about but after I wrote it I figured out who I was imagining driving around with. It was written in 2019 but very much so sounds like a pandemic song.”
The weight of the past two years is palpable on Comfort To Me, as Taylor explains: “After the Bushfire season, and when the pandemic hit, our options were the same as everyone: go find a day job and work in intense conditions or sit at home and drown in introspection. I fell into the latter category. I had all this energy inside of me and nowhere to put it because I couldn’t perform, and it had a hectic effect on my brain. Having to deal with a lot of authority during 2020 and realizing my lack of power made me feel both more self-destructive and more self-disciplined, more nihilistic and more depressed and more resentful, which ultimately fueled me with a kind of relentless motivation. I became a temporary monster. I partied more, but I also exercised heaps, read books and ate veggies. I was like an egg going into boiling water when this started, gooey and weak but with a hard surface. I came out even harder. I’m still soft on the inside, but in a different way. My brain evolved and warped and my way of thinking about the world completely changed.”
On October 5, Amyl and The Sniffers will premiere a filmed performance of Comfort to Me, played in full, in one take, on a slab of concrete in a suburban wasteland somewhere in Melbourne. Tickets are available on the band’s webstore at amylandthesniffers.com.
