About this time last year, Northlane released an album out of nowhere, Mesmer, and it really took us all by surprise. To coincide with the album’s release, they went on a world tour (read our gig review) and from that tour, the band have hand-picked 10 love tracks and released them today. To celebrate the release of Analog Future the band are doing a headline set at the UNSW Roundhouse in Sydney tonight with special guests Justice for The Dammed, Resist the Thought and DVSR.

Northlane hit the stage and we knew exactly what to do, that is to raise our hands high, sing and scream along to Quantum Flux.

The Roundhouse recently underwent some major changes and some of those changes occurred to sound and lighting, and tonight it really showed. Aided by two giant screens hovering both sides of the stage, the imagery portrayed was intense and somewhat psychedelic, adding to this was the impressive light show that really lifted the whole experience.

The music as always would speak volumes, the kind where the volume is turned way up. You can hear the clarity in Marcus Bridge’s voice when he hits those higher notes. I say Northlane’s heavy sound and technical musicianship were a perfect test for the speakers and they aced it.

Every song on tonight’s set was a heavy hitter, receiving a cheer from the crowd as it began and ecstatic applause at its end, mosh pits were happening all over the floor and even one punter managed to invade the stage. There was so much love in the room for tonight’s performance, one in which the band has stated will be their last for some time.

If this is to be the end for who knows how long then Northlane wanted us to go out hard with set closer Masquerade, a song they haven’t played in a while. From my perch high on the balcony where I was watching the beauty and chaos of the mosh pit below, I witnessed at songs end that no-one was willing to go anywhere. They stayed firm, applauded and cheered, and were rewarded for their dedication with just one more song, Undertow.

What a great night for the Australian scene, Northlane really do know how to put on a good show, another night of live music I’m glad I didn’t miss.
