It is Friday night and I feel more than alright as I am headed down to the Bald Face Stag to get me a dosage of some drunken southern hard rock and psychobilly cowpunk soaked in whiskey. If you don’t know what I am talking about let me spell it out for you, I am talking about PUSSY, specifically the Nashville kind that hail from Atlanta, Georgia. Yes, I am referring to the underground rock n’ roll legends that are Nashville Pussy who are on tour in our wonderful country and tonight it’s Sydney’s turn to get smeared with their high octane, whisky soaked, sleazy stage show.

I reckon The Bald Face is the perfect venue to host a band like Nashville, they play the sort of music that makes me wanna drink beer, tear my sleeves, stomp my foot and nod my head as they got me revved up straight away taking to the stage and blasting us with Everybody’s Fault but Mine. From then on, we just got going flat out like a lizard lounging in the sun but with much more energy. So much of tonight’s energy was up there on the stage as the four-piece group did their thing. Frontman Blaine Cartwright embodies everything you would expect, the handle-bar mustache to the cowboy hat (he would later in the set drink beer out of) and his low down dirty vocal sound. His wife Ruyter Suys’s wild guitar playing skills made me tired just watching her. She ran, jumped and totally tapped into the true spirit of rock’n’roll as she swigged down JD straight out the bottle in between songs. Matching her almost in her stage presence is their new bassist, Bonnie Buitrago, who’s bass playing added real grunt to the sound and great visual as she had an ample amount of cleavage out on display for the crowd to admire. The harder she played the more sweat glistened down that cleavage, and it felt like real rock’n’roll to me.

Much of the band’s lyrical themes revolve around sex, drugs and drinking, as evident on their tracks Rub it to Death and Piece of Ass along with the tracks I’m So High and Hate and Whiskey. They would cap off the set with Pussy’s Not a Dirty Word. The Bald Face stage set up doesn’t really allow for the whole leave and come back out encore, but the band attempt to play things out like they should. As they sit down, drummer Ben Thomas comes back and gives us a bit of a drum solo, but soon the others return from just behind the speaker and give us a three-track encore that featured Strutting Cock, Why Why Why and cultivated in a finisher of epic proportions with Go Motherfucker Go, as guitarist Ruyter breaks her strings and sprays the front row with JD. What a fucking performance! Everyone in the place tonight is applauding and cheering with grins from ear to ear.

I recommend you go out and get yourself a dosage of Nashville Pussy immediately.
