A Wilhelm Scream are a melodic hardcore band from Massachusetts USA. We had the chance to chat with guitarist and songwriter Trevor Reilly about the upcoming Australian tour and his love of Coopers beers.

SCENEzine
What is A Wilhelm Scream up to right now?

Trevor Reilly
Well we are currently in Fort Collins Colorado on a tour through the states with Pennywise.

SCENEzine
The latest album Partycrasher was produced and engineered by yourself. How much does that change things from just being behind the guitar?

Trevor Reilly
It was different in the fact that it’s all on us to make sure everything is right and technically sound. We did a lot of experimentation on party crasher to find our own ways of doing things. Which was equally rewarding as just being a writer or guitarist. We’ve always been a band who is very efficient at song writing before we get in the studio. I grew up being in my dads studio so I’m very comfortable around a studio. We are definitely hungry to get onto the next one also. The whole mission accomplished feeling at the end makes us want to feel that again.

SCENEzine
Is the plan to just keep touring party crasher or would you record again fairly soon?

Trevor Reilly
Well we have several places left on our map to go to. Australia being one of them. We couldn’t skip touring the party crasher record in Australia since we have such amazing support. Also we want to visit Japan and Brazil.
At the same time we really want to set aside some time to get back to Massachusetts to get back in our studio and write some more jams. I personally have a bunch of ideas so far ready to jam on. We will definitely be hitting the ground running.

SCENEzine
A Wilhelm Scream’s sound is melodic yet hardcore at the same time. What kind of bands have inspired you?

Trevor Reilly
A lot of different bands have influenced us. Certainly Hot Water Music was a huge influence at a very young age. Back when they were on No Idea records the emotion and heart and soul that they always put out had a profound effect. Also Bad Religion, Lifetime, Pennywise and Iron Maiden the list goes on and on when it comes to stuff that knocks our socks off. Propagandhi is another inspiration they continue to put our records with each one better than rest.

SCENEzine
Your guitar riffs can be quite complex. Is that intentional to keep pushing yourself as a songwriter?

Trevor Reilly
Yeah, definitely. We always feel a need to try and do ourselves. To try and write a better song each time. It’s the one strand of dna that all A Wilhelm Scream members have had past and present the drive to make things better.

SCENEzine
Another key element to your songs is the intelligent lyrics. How does the lyric writing process work?

Trevor Reilly
Most of the lyric writing is done by myself. It’s always been a big passion for me. Nuno and myself also collaborate a lot. Mike has also started getting into lyric writing which is really cool to see. I’ve been writing lyrics for over twenty years now. I’ve been bitten by the writing bug so I’m always writing lyrics and songs.

SCENEzine
Do you have any memories of previous Australian tours?

Trevor Reilly
The first memory that comes to mind is that the bands first ever sell out show was in Melbourne. That was a first for anywhere in the world for our band. It was an iconic venue in Melbourne called the Arthouse that I don’t believe is there any more several years ago. I’ll never forget that day and night it was super fun and positive. Bodies were flying everywhere it was rad. Of course though holding a koala and patting kangaroos was pretty mind blowing also. Tons of great memories.

SCENEzine
Did you like any Australian beer?

Trevor Reilly
Oh yeah, definitely. The green Coopers. We are all about the green Coopers. Fantastic beer. You guys know how to party down there.

SCENEzine
Are you guys excited to be playing Punk Rock Bowling fest in Vegas alongside bands like Rancid, Refused and Dropkick Murphys?

Trevor Reilly-
Big time. I’ve never seen Rancid before and I can’t believe we are playing with Refused that’s crazy. So stoked.
It’s gunna be a blast. Our singer Nuno is getting married in the summer so the Vegas trip will be like his bachelor party. His fiancée is also coming out with all of the girls. We are gunna be one big happy family living it up in Vegas. They’ll have a bachelorette party. We will have a bachelor party, watch some punk rock and hopefully get to see Rancid, Refused and Murder City Devils. We have always wanted to play Punk Rock Bowling and we are so thrilled we got offered to play this year. We are very, very excited.

SCENEzine-
Is there any chance A Wilhelm Scream will be at Riot Fest?

Trevor Reilly
That would be awesome. We did that a few years ago in Chicago and it was so much fun. So many rad bands and awesome crowd. We were super thrilled to play that. Hopefully they ask us again someday that would be rad.

SCENEzine
It’s just recently been announced that you’ve added two special by request shows to the Australian tour. One in Sydney and one in Melbourne. Do you know what we can expect from that?

Trevor Reilly-
Firstly I want to say thank you everyone who bought tickets early because the first Sydney and Melbourne shows have both sold out. So we have added the shows as a thank you to everyone for their support. I believe you can go online and request songs. We are basically just going to compile all of the songs that get requested and play as many songs as we possibly can. We did it once before and it went great. It was super trial by fire and I feel like it really brought out the best in us.

SCENEzine-
Have you done the whole play the album in full style tour before?

Trevor Reilly
We have done it for two of our records Mute Print and Ruiner. We did a Mute Print one in London and Ruiner in both Boston and LA. The shows went great it was awesome. It’ll probably be a while before we do something like that again that way it stays more special. It was super fun. I can see why bands appreciate getting to do stuff like that.

SCENEzine-
Do you have any last message for your Australian fans?

Trevor Reilly
I just wanna say we can’t wait to rock out with you guys. Thank you so much for the support over the years and having us back in your beautiful country. We are super stoked and can’t wait to get back there.
